I've been known to use Steve as a placeholder quite extensively. I ran a D&D game with a necromancer NPC screwup whose name was a thinly disguised "Steve", and my Dalek's name is Steve as well.

I used Steve as my pseudonym whenever I'm ordering food or something that requires me to leave my name to be called out when my order is ready. My name is Brad, but for whatever reason, people have trouble understanding what is a fairly simple 4-letter name and think I've said Bryan, Brett, or some other ridiculous name. So, these days, I just go with Steve. Every once in a while I'll forget that I left my name as Steve and I'll stare obliviously as my order is called and the person calling my name is staring straight at me. Only occasionally, though.
